A GREAT READ!

"A Great Read" is how Darcia Helle titled her review of my first mystery novel, FOR EVERY ACTION There Are Consequences. This is an excerpt from her review:

Pepper Bibeau is an insurance investigator who unwittingly gets wrapped up in a murder mystery. Set in the sixties, before cell phones and computers took over our existence, Pepper has to do things the old fashioned way - by speaking to people in person and being available for landline phone calls. References are made to the political and social issues of the late sixties but not to the point where younger readers unfamiliar with the era would have difficulty understanding things.

... various subplots woven through the entire story ... all comes together in a well-crafted, tangled mystery.

For Every Action is the first in a planned Pepper Bibeau series. I'm looking forward to the next one!

Darcia Helle is the author of several mystery novels, including NO JUSTICE (A Michael Sykora novel). The title initially caught my attention because Sykora is the maiden name of my mother's great grandmother. For me, everything relates to genealogy. And, yes, a book's title is an important consideration for the reader.

  1. This sounds like a book I would love. I was twenty in 1960. That was my era. Landlines. No cell phones. Electric typewriters. A slower time that I sometimes long for--though I don't want to give up the computer and go back to typewriters!

Thanks for posting this review excerpt, Gail. And have a wonderful weekend!

  2. You are right about not wanting to go back to electric typewriters. When someone told me they had a cell phone and wouldn't have a land line in their homw again, I thought that was so radical. Now I wonder why people bother with them.

It was a challenge to write the novel and keep everything authentic, not on my part, but for readers who look at the 60's as part of the jurassic period! Some readers initially objected to my mention of printers in 1968.

  3. "For Every Action" does sound like a great read. I remember using the IBM Selectric typewriter (a type of primitive word processor with built-in printer) and thinking how modern it was with its styling and that letters sphere.
Things are different today, but I don't think necessarily for the better.
That other book is interesting "Justice", a seemingly elusive concept.

    Thank You.

  5. Sounds like a terrific book and congrats on the great review! Nice to see someone using the era BEFORE all the modern conviences. I remember the land lines.. also known as home phones..lol. I remember the old fashioned notion of TALKING FACE TO FACE..even if I am only 47. I miss those times and would enjoy this book so very much.

  6. Anthony, I used the IBM Selectric on my first office job in Chicago, never imagined what might replace it!

J.C., glad you like the cover. I do too, because it leaves little doubt about the novel's genre.

Melanie, thank you for the congrats! I remember the land lines; face-to-face, not so much (LOL)
