Friendly Haiku with Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea

River Street in Chinatown

Smiling Wahine

It always amazes me just how many different colors of bougainvillea exist. At Queen Kapiolani Park in Honolulu recently, I took pictures of an array of bushes that contained almost every color of the rainbow.

Even with all those choices though, my favorite is still the brilliant purple of many bushes found around town.

The above picture was taken many years ago, before someone decided to chop away the branches of flowering bushes that hung over the Nu’uanu Stream canal where the water flows parallel to River Street in Chinatown. With all the extended stretches of concrete and brick buildings, erected after the plague and fire of 1900, I miss the vibrancy those blossoms offered.
